The Body’s Built-In Healing Intelligence

Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.

Hippocrates 460 – 370 B.C.

Most people are taught to think about health in terms of fighting disease. We hear about medications, treatments, and interventions designed to “battle” illness. But one of the most empowering truths about the human body is this: your body is already designed to heal itself.

At 84 years old, I have come to appreciate this truth in a very personal way. Rather than assuming that aging must lead to decline, I have focused on creating the conditions that allow the body’s natural repair systems to function well. What I have discovered is that when we support the body wisely, it can continue to perform remarkably well—even in what I call the 5th Stage of Life, the years between 80 and 100+.

This isn’t just a theory. It is something we have all experienced many times.

If you cut your finger, the wound gradually closes and new tissue forms. You didn’t consciously instruct your body to repair the skin. It simply happened.

If you break a bone, the body rebuilds the bone tissue.

If you catch a cold, your immune system works around the clock to clear the virus.

In each of these situations, healing happens automatically.

You might say it this way: you didn’t consciously heal that wound. Your body did it automatically. The same biological intelligence that heals a cut is operating in every cell of your body all the time.
Recognizing this changes how we think about health. It reminds us that the body is constantly working to maintain balance and repair damage.

Yet when people develop chronic diseases or autoimmune conditions, they often feel as if their body has turned against them. It can seem as though the body has lost the ability to heal.

In many cases, however, the problem is not that the body cannot heal. The issue is that the body’s internal environment is interfering with the healing process.

A helpful way to understand this is through a simple analogy.

Healing is like tending a garden.

The body is the soil.
Cells are the plants.
Lifestyle is the climate.

When the soil is rich and the climate is supportive, plants naturally thrive. But when the soil is depleted and the environment is harsh, the plants struggle.

Our health works in much the same way. The goal is not to force healing. The goal is to remove the obstacles so the body can do what it already knows how to do.

In daily life, this means supporting the body’s healing environment.

Reducing chronic inflammation is one step. Many modern diets and lifestyles create a constant inflammatory burden. Choosing mostly whole, unprocessed foods—especially vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains—helps calm this environment.

Supporting the microbiome is another step. The trillions of microbes in our digestive system help regulate the immune system. Fiber-rich plant foods nourish beneficial bacteria that help balance inflammation.

Cells also repair themselves best when their energy systems are working well. Regular movement, restorative sleep, time outdoors, and simple stress-reduction practices support the mitochondria—the tiny energy generators inside our cells.
Finally, the body needs time and space for recovery. Much of our repair occurs during sleep and periods of rest, when the body is not overwhelmed by constant stress.

Perhaps the most important message is this: the body is not your enemy.

Even in the 5th Stage of Life, the body is still trying to protect and repair itself. When we create the right conditions, the body’s healing intelligence can continue working throughout our later years.
Healing is not something we force. It is something we allow when we support the body in doing what it was designed to do.
