The above image shows the most famous line from the 1976 satirical film Network. The iconic text captures the individual’s frustration against a system that feels overpowering and out of control. What makes this 48-year-old movie so unique is its timeless commentary on the media’s role in society, which manipulates and influences public opinion by turning serious social and global issues into entertainment and spectacles. Behind the scenario are the government, corporations, and industries that fulfill their agendas and ambitions for profit and power.
The movie portrays a society desensitized to violence, sensationalism, moral decay, and the loss of genuine human connection. I thought it was amazing to witness a cry for sanity back in 1976, well before the existence of cell phones and the Internet.
Whether we want to think about it or not, we are at a crossroads, facing an existential challenge that no previous civilization has faced. The situation is grave because we are on the verge of WWlll with the potential of a thermonuclear holocaust that could end everything. Are we aware of that fact, as uncomfortable as it makes us feel, or do we prefer to ignore it?
I like to be entertained by TV, sporting events, movies, video games, and social media, just as much as anyone else. However, I try to remember that apart from enjoyment, the entertainment industry influences the way we think about current global issues, such as the one mentioned in the previous paragraph.
AMERICA’S DILEMMA
The United States is in the unique position to rapidly put an end to the present wars in Ukraine and Gaza. All it takes is to stop supplying Israel and Ukraine with weapons. That’s it!!! If it made that choice, it could reverse the dark direction the world is heading in today before it’s too late. Whether the US is willing to make that decision is another question and is the essence of what I want to explain.
The US is facing an existential dilemma because of its “addiction” to being the sole economic and military superpower on Earth. Once considered the greatest country and envy of the world, it now has to resort to bully tactics such as sanctions, regime change, and war to ensure that no nation can ever rival it. It reminds me of the gunfighters of the old Western movies. As they age, their abilities and skills decline. They lose their edge, and eventually, younger gunfighters, quicker on the draw, come along to challenge the old man. Today, Russia and China are the challengers. What is different is that they are constructing a multipolar world based on mutual respect, equality, and peace among nations. It is the antithesis to a unipolar world, with one hegemonic nation. As a result, many countries have already joined the movement or are seriously considering joining. With the development of the BRICS Alliance, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), multipolarity is well on its way, offering a more prosperous future for third-world countries and developing countries of the Global South.
WHO IS PROVOKING WHO?
The shift to multipolarity is a shift from a war mindset to diplomacy and negotiations to solve global issues. Because of the resulting chaos and destruction, war is an obstacle to the success of the multipolar movement and must be avoided. Keep that concept in mind when you try to understand and ask the question, how come we live in such dangerous and fearful times when the vast majority of the world wants peace?
The answer lies in America’s unwillingness to accept that 1) it’s no longer the lone global superpower, and 2) a shift to a multipolar world order, free from hegemonic rule, is the future. By not accepting the “writing on the wall,” the US is presently doing everything in its power, including sanctions, threats of regime change, meddling in a country’s internal affairs, including elections, and all-out war, to prevent the BRICS alliance, the BRI, and the SCO from achieving their goals.
Last Friday, Zelensky, still considered Ukraine’s President by the US, and UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, traveled to the US to ask for permission to launch US Atacam and UK Stormshadow missiles deep into Russia, with the potential to strike Moscow and St. Petersburg. Aware of the potentially grave repercussions of such acts, especially after Putin’s warning of retaliation, the response from President Biden and his advisors was no! It was a sigh of relief…for the moment. However, by Insisting on sustaining the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, sometimes called “forever wars,” with no serious interest in negotiations, the US and its allies are playing with fire and gambling with a future that could very well lead to expanded wars and nuclear annihilation.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Our main obstacle to effecting positive changes is the belief that we are powerless. Individually, there are things we can do, and when we work with others, we can effect change. Using your vote to elect the best possible candidates, researching alternative media, sharing your knowledge with open-minded people, and protesting are options. Remember that Global Peace Protests had the power to help bring about the end of the Vietnam War. That was then.
Today, we are witnessing growing awareness of the tragedy in Gaza, and the need to put a stop to it. As the number of protests and participants continues to grow, I am hopeful that these actions will not only sway public opinion enough, as they did in the 1960s, but have a longer-lasting effect, ensuring that a lasting peace could be a reality.

Now is the time to summon the brave warrior within and be guided by common sense, conscience, intuition, and a deep feeling of what is good and what is right. Listening to that internal voice will tell you what is real and what is fake. Remember that we are all human beings, capable of feeling the virtues of empathy, kindness, compassion, humility, peace, and love instead of anger, hate, greed, and vengeance, emotions that characterize those who are leading us into today’s costly never-ending wars that, if they persist, will almost surely end in the total destruction of life on Earth. It’s a time for you and me to know and choose what we want and try to awaken those still caught up in this surreal battle zone, constantly bombarded by media propaganda.
Will we continue to acquiesce and succumb to the forces that seek to control our lives? Will we continue to listen and follow the directions of the so-called leaders we elected, regardless of their plans or motives? Or, will we rise as champions of knowledge and truth and say NO!? I’m as mad as hell…and I’m not going to take this anymore.
